Ben and I met at Hillel’s first dinner of the year, Shabbat, Memorial Day 2006. We must have met or at least seen each other the previous academic year, as regulars in the CU Jewish scene, but neither of us remembers meeting the other prior to that day.
As you may know, Ben moonlights as the chazzan (cantor) for Hillel’s high holiday services. Luckily, Ben wasn’t leading Kol Nidre (the night before Yom Kippur) services 2006, because we ended up in the ER getting my toe fixed after an uncomfortable accident due to me having a micro-kitchen in my tiny little campus apartment. While I was recovering/on prescription pain killers my dad told Ben “You broke it, you bought it.” Mostly in jest, but it worked!
After I graduated from college, we moved in together into a larger apartment with a nice big kitchen in South Boulder. Before moving in together, we decided (well, really I told Ben) that once our two year lease was up for renewal, we should probably start to think about either moving on or think about getting married. Easy to see which choice we made: we’re married! To prove how devoted Ben was, he even asked me to be his wife BEFORE the landlady asked us to renew the 2-year lease.
One more thing –as long as you’re reading this– in case you were wondering why we’ve registered for two sets of dishes and cookware but only one of tableware: We do keep kosher but we already have a lovely set of fleishik (meat) flatware and my gramma has kindly said that she’ll be gifting us a set of formal china/silver/crystal. Wow.
